Slot machines are devious little devils that feed on spinners’ cash for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The vast majority of players who wage war against the one-armed bandits inevitably end up on the losing side in the long run. This is hardly surprising, considering how heavily tilted these games are in the house’s favor.

Yet every now and then, a slot machine will drop a massive jackpot to whet gamblers’ appetites and rekindle their hopes of becoming multimillionaires. Of course, such life-changing wins occur only on rare occasions. As activist Harriet Tubman once said, “Every dream begins with a dreamer.”

We present to you six of the largest jackpot wins these notorious one-armed bandits have awarded so far. Some of these took place in land-based casinos and were accompanied by a tragic twist of fate. Others were paid out by online gambling operators and have made it into the Guinness World Records.

The Biggest Slot Winners in Landbased Casinos

Land-based casinos feature many progressive machines, but one slot stands above the rest: Megabucks by IGT. The game is renowned for awarding the biggest jackpot wins in history – not only in brick-and-mortar venues but online as well.

Megabucks remains the world’s top jackpot payer, holding the record for the largest slot prizes ever awarded in both land-based and online casinos. The series debuted on casino floors in the 1980s.

It was the first slot machine to introduce a wide-area progressive jackpot. All machines are linked across participating casinos, with a portion of every wager feeding the ever-growing prize pool.

Players become eligible for the jackpot with a maximum bet of $3 (three $1 coins). Below are the largest payouts this legendary slot has produced over the years.

Megabucks Drops the Biggest Slot Jackpot Win in History

IGT’s Megabucks slot delivered one of the biggest wins in Las Vegas history on March 21, 2003. The record-breaking jackpot struck at Excalibur Casino, where a 25-year-old man from Los Angeles decided to try the machine while waiting for a baseball game to begin.

The choice proved life-changing as Megabucks rewarded him with $39.7 million. After wagering just $100, the young engineer hit the massive prize. Rather than taking the money in a lump sum, he opted to receive annual payments of $1.5 million over 25 years.

Elmer Sherwin – the Veteran Who Hit a Multi-Million Win Twice

They say the odds of landing a multimillion-dollar slot jackpot are longer than those of being struck by lightning. Yet one fortunate player beat those odds not once but twice.

That player was Elmer Sherwin, a World War II veteran who celebrated his first life-changing win in 1989. Sherwin collected $4.6 million from the famed Megabucks machine at Las Vegas’ Mirage Resort and Casino, just hours after the property’s grand opening. He was 76 years old at the time.

After the surprise windfall, Mr. Sherwin said it was his dream to hit a second Megabucks jackpot. Sixteen years later, that dream came true.

Imagine everyone’s astonishment when Mr. Sherwin, then 92 years old, captured another $21.1 million on Megabucks in 2005 at the Cannery Casino and Hotel in North Las Vegas. He donated a sizable portion of his winnings to charity, including a relief fund for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Following his second win, Mr. Sherwin expressed a desire to set an even higher record by winning Megabucks a third time, and he also had his eye on the Wheel of Fortune machine. Sadly, that wish never materialized. The veteran passed away in March 2007 at the age of 94.

The Megabucks Curse or the Tragedy Behind a Record $35 Million Win

Megabucks has inspired a variety of myths and urban legends, with some gamblers believing that jackpot winners are doomed to an untimely death. Although there is no evidence the so-called “curse” is real, one winner suffered a tragic fate.

That winner was Las Vegas cocktail waitress Cynthia Jay-Brennan, who was 37 years old at the time of her life-changing hit. In 2000, Jay-Brennan played a Megabucks machine at the now-closed Desert Inn Casino and won $34.9 million, the largest progressive jackpot of its day.

After the win, she married her boyfriend, and the couple planned to travel the world. Sadly, their dreams were cut short. Just weeks after the record payout, Jay-Brennan’s Camaro was struck by a drunk driver at a red light.

Her sister, Lela Jay, who was riding with her, was killed instantly. Cynthia suffered a broken spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. She remains in a wheelchair and depends on her husband for everyday tasks such as dressing and brushing her hair.

In the aftermath of the crash, Mrs. Jay-Brennan said she would gladly surrender the entire jackpot if she could walk again and have her sister back.

Record-Breaking Slot Wins in Online Casinos

The chance to win an eight-figure fortune is not reserved for land-based slot players alone. Online progressives such as Microgaming’s Mega Moolah and NetEnt’s Mega Fortune also deliver jaw-dropping payouts while giving spinners the extra benefits of convenience and flexibility. Below are three of the most spectacular wins these two heavy hitters have granted online players since their launch.

Mega Moolah Makes History with the Largest Online Slot Win

Microgaming’s Mega Moolah slot made headlines in October 2015 after paying out a record £13.2 million to Jon Heywood of Cheshire, England. The win sparked a frenzy because the slot’s jackpot had been climbing for quite some time.

The 26-year-old British soldier captured the massive prize at Betway Casino, wagering just £0.25 per spin. It was his first visit to the site. Heywood was watching television at the time and later admitted he was more focused on the show than on the game.

After only 25 minutes of play, the jackpot bonus game appeared and delivered the eight-figure payout. Heywood was stunned – he could barely believe what he was seeing.

The timing could not have been better. Earlier that year, Heywood had lost his grandfather, and his father was awaiting urgent lung and heart transplants.

Following the win, the Afghanistan veteran said his top priority was helping his ill father obtain the best treatment money could buy. He also planned to indulge in a small treat for himself.

He soon swapped his aging Fiat Punto for a luxurious Bentley Continental GT. At the time, his windfall was the largest online slot jackpot ever recorded, earning him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

NetEnt's Top-Payer Mega Fortune Awards a €17.8 Million to a Poker Player

Before Jon Heywood’s record-setting Mega Moolah win, NetEnt’s Mega Fortune held the crown for the largest online jackpot. On January 20, 2013, a 40-year-old man from Helsinki, Finland, captured €17.8 million.

Choosing to remain anonymous, the winner hit the massive prize at the Aland-based site Paf with a wager of just €0.25. Beyond the fact that he was primarily a poker player, little else is known about him.

In an interview with Paf the following day, he said he had been a customer for two or three years but usually played only small stakes. Asked about his plans, the Finn said he intended to buy a nice car and hire a personal trainer to get back in shape.

A Norway University Student Becomes €11.7 Million Richer

A couple of years before the €17.8 million payout, Mega Fortune awarded €11.7 million to an anonymous university student from scenic Hordaland county, Norway. Just 20 years old, the student was having trouble sleeping and decided to pass the time by playing Mega Fortune at Betsson Casino.

Remarkably, he used free spins previously granted by the casino. As he later explained, he was not an avid slots player and usually preferred betting on sports through Betsson’s sportsbook.

When he noticed the jackpot’s enormous value, he chose to give the slot a chance. The student was so overwhelmed by the life-changing win that he laughed and cried at the same time when the eight-figure sum flashed on his screen.

Betsson subsequently offered to connect the young winner with professional advisors to help him manage his newfound wealth.

Jackpots and Slot Machine Malfunctions

Katrina Bookman hits a jackpot win of $42.9 million

Jackpot win of $8.6 million

There is nothing worse than believing you have hit a massive jackpot, only to have your dream of becoming a multi-millionaire instantly shattered. Yet this is exactly what happened to Katrina Bookman.

In August 2016, Bookman visited Resorts World Casino in New York, where she played the Sphinx slot. Imagine her surprise when a $42.9 million jackpot appeared on the screen of the penny machine she was playing. The elated player even took a selfie with the slot she believed had changed her life forever.

Unfortunately, when Ms. Bookman tried to claim her prize, a Resorts World employee explained to her that the slot she had played had malfunctioned and had not actually awarded the life-changing jackpot. The maximum amount any player could win on this machine was capped at $6,500.

Instead of leaving the casino millions of dollars richer, Bookman was offered a steak dinner on the house. The disgruntled “winner” later sued Resorts World, citing “mental anguish” as the cause.
