Analysis Predicts the Winners at the 96th Academy Awards

On January 23, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, some of the most fascinating and diverse Oscar nominees in recent years were revealed, kickstarting the 96th Academy Awards countdown. The cultural phenomenon of ‘Barbenheimer’ stole the show with the astounding twenty-one nominations between the two films (eight for Barbie and thirteen for Oppenheimer), competing in a total of six categories.

Our team at BonusInsider was caught up in the Oscar fever and decided to delve a little further and guess the most probable winners of this year’s ceremony. Our predictions for the 2024 Academy Awards are based on a combination of past ceremony data and this year’s winners and nominees of the awards season so far.

Best Picture

The Best Picture award is arguably the most anticipated category by many. Following its phenomenal box office run, Oppenheimer is currently the most nominated film for the 2024 Academy Awards with 13 nominations altogether.

Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster took home the Best Motion Picture trophies at the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globes for drama and the BAFTA, suggesting a strong lead for the Oscars.

The second-most acclaimed film is Poor Things with 11 nominations. The bizarre tale of Bella Baxter has won the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival, which is considered one of the highest honors in the industry. Furthermore, Poor Things won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy, prevailing over The Holdovers, another nominee for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest are three foreign language films, competing for Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars, demonstrating the Academy’s desire to show more diversity this year. Anatomy of a Fall won last year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival and is regarded as one of the best international films in recent years. Unfortunately, however, the statistics do not favor foreign films winning Best Picture, since just eighteen movies—including these three—have been nominated for the category, over the 95-year history of the Academy Awards and only one of those films has ever taken home the trophy (Parasite in 2019).

For the first time, three films with female directors are nominated in the same year for Best Picture: Greta Gerwig with Barbie, Celine Song with Past Lives, and Justine Triet with Anatomy of a Fall. Only twice has a female director taken home the Best Picture trophy. The first was Kathryn Bigelow in 2008 with The Hurt Locker, and the second was Chloe Zhao with her 2020 Nomadland.

Steven Spielberg has set yet another record with the biographical romantic drama Maestro. This is his 13th film nominated for the Best Picture category, which is more than any other producer has ever achieved in the history of the Oscars. Who knows, the 13th might be a lucky one.

Based on the results of this season’s awards and nominations, the top three competitors to Oppenheimer are Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives and Poor Things. Each has been recognized by some of the film industry’s most distinguished critics and awards, making them a must-watch if you still haven’t.

Best Director

After the surprising exclusion of Greta Gerwig from the Best Director nominations, many believe that the 96th Academy Awards will be the ceremony where Christopher Nolan finally wins the Oscar statuette. Nolan has been nominated eight times throughout his career for Best Director, but he is yet to win the award.

An honorary achievement is marked by Martin Scorsese this year, who at the age of eighty-one, has broken the record for the oldest person to receive a Best Director nomination and is currently the oldest living person with the most nominations for Best Director with a total of 10 Oscar nods.

The odds are favoring a triumphant victory for Christopher Nolan, as he already won this year’s Golden Globe award, the Critics’ Choice award and the BAFTA for Best Director, among other prestigious recognitions, each bringing him 10 points for our ranking and scoring an amazing 84.08% out of the maximum score.

This year marks the first nominations for Jonathan Glazer and Justine Triet. Triet is now the third woman to win the Palme d’Or and the eighth woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars.

Best Actor

Cillian Murphy is the front-runner for the Best Actor Academy Award this year in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer. This is the actor’s first Oscar nomination, but based on our calculations and supporting evidence, the odds are ever so slightly in his favor, as he leads the ranking with 62.80%. Paul Giamatti is his main rival with a rating of 54.08%. Both actors won a Golden Globe for Best Actor; Giamatti won in the Musical or Comedy category and Murphy in the Drama one. Giamatti overcame Murphy to win the Critic’s Choice Award in the Best Actor category while the Oppenheimer actor won the BAFTA, making them this year’s top contenders for the Oscar.

The actors Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown from American Fiction are the first Black actors to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, for roles in the same film. Wright is the third most likely actor to receive the Award, although he falls behind with 44.08%. Maestro’s director and lead actor, Bradley Cooper, along with Christopher Nolan, is one of the two individuals who have been nominated in three different Oscar categories this year. Cooper ranks 4th on our list with a 40.32% score for the Best Actor award, but interestingly, he became a member of a very exclusive club of only 5 actors, who have directed themselves to a nomination for Best Actor more than once, as his first time was for A Star is Born in 2018. Warren Beatty, Charlie Chaplin, Clint Eastwood, and Laurence Olivier are the other four actors.

Best Actress

The announcement of this year’s nominees for Best Actress was unexpected for many movie enthusiasts, as one of the favorites failed to meet the expectations. Barbie was the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and despite being nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was not successful in securing a spot in two key categories, namely Best Director and Best Actress.

It’s worth noting some intriguing facts that this year’s Academy Awards feature such as the record seven LGBTQ+ characters portrayed in films that have been nominated. Among the nominees is Lily Gladstone, who is the first openly non-binary actor to receive a nomination. Gladstone, who is nominated for Best Actress is also the first Native American to be nominated in this category.

The battle for the 96th Academy Award for Best Actress is predominantly between Gladstone and Emma Stone. Based on their winnings and nominations during this year’s awards season, the Killers of the Flower Moon actress leads our chart with 73.18% over Emma Stone who achieved 67.71%.

Emma Stone’s performance in 2017’s La La Land earned the actress her first Academy Award for Best Actress and this year she won the BAFTA for Leading Actress, while Gladstone wasn’t even nominated, giving the La La Land actress a slight edge over the rest of the nominees. Both won a Golden Globe for Best Actress, but Stone also won the Critics’ Choice Award. Nevertheless, Gladstone still managed to receive more awards overall and become a favorite for the Oscar win.

The third actress most likely to win the Oscar is Sandra Huller with a 47.77% probability for her performance in Anatomy of a Fall. The actress stars in The Zone of Interest as well, which is also nominated for Best Picture.

Best Supporting Actor

With a 72.36% likelihood of winning, Robert Downey Jr. is leading the way for the Best Supporting Actor category. His chances are greatly improved by Oppenheimer’s momentum and its 13 Academy Award nominations this year. In addition, the actor has an advantage over his competitors by winning the Golden Globe, the Critics’ Choice Award, the BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award for Best Supporting Actor making his triumph at the Oscars almost 100% guaranteed, as no man who’s won all of the above in the same year has ever lost the Academy Award.

The other two actors who are favored for the prized Oscar are Mark Ruffalo (54.97%) for his performance in Poor Things and Ryan Gosling (54.59%) for his Ken in Barbie. Although Ruffalo, now a fourth-time Oscar nominee, won the Capri Hollywood International Film Festival and the National Board of Review Awards for Best Supporting Actor, he couldn’t make it to this year’s BAFTA and SAG awards nominees, which plummets his chances for success at the Oscars.

For that reason, if we were to single out one competitor to Robert Downey Jr., it would be Ryan Gosling, who so far has had two nominations for a Best Actor Academy Award.

Best Supporting Actress

Our most prominent leader out of all categories is Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who sweeps the competition away for Best Supporting Actress with a 92.29% chance of winning the Oscar. The actress’s moving performance in The Holdovers has led to her first Academy Award nomination. From all the award ceremonies we included in this analysis, the actress has won 10 out of the 11 awards she’s been nominated for, including a Golden Globe, the Critics’ Choice Award and BAFTA. The 11th win may easily be the Satellite Awards, which will be held on March 3.

Emily Blunt appears as the second-most likely actress to win the Oscar with a 50.06% probability. The SAG awards were her last chance to swing the scales slightly in her favor; Da’Vine Joy Randolph won that too.

America Ferrera‘s nomination for Best Supporting Actress is perhaps the most surprising one, given Margot Robbie’s exclusion from the Best Actress category. According to our research, Ferrera is also the least likely to win the Academy Award with only a 25.92% chance. The other two actresses in the competition are Danielle Brooks (30.19%) and Jodie Foster (27.45%), whose results are also highly unlikely to prevail. According to our calculations, if you want to bet your money on the Oscars, this is the no-brainer category.

Best Original Screenplay

The Holdovers take the first place in the Best Original Screenplay category in our predictions with a 47.55% chance of winning. The film is considered the front-runner for the Academy Award after receiving five Oscar nominations in total. The comedy-drama has overall good reviews and responses from both movie lovers and critics. Having Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s success and remarkable recognition so far, the film has a solid chance of winning.

The second-most likely winner is May December (47.28%). Its strong performance comes from two prestigious acknowledgments from the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the National Society of Film Critics Awards. The film features two Academy Award winners for Best Actress, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman which is always an advantage when your picture is nominated for the Oscars.

With just a 40.82% chance of winning, Anatomy of a Fall should still not be underestimated for the prized statuette, as the movie already won the Palme d’Or, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay.

Best Adapted Screenplay

According to data, the past four Best Picture winners also took home the Best Screenplay prize, with the last three of them coming from the Original Screenplay category. It remains to be seen if Oppenheimer will break this trend; it is the favorite with a 60.34% overall score for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Poor Things is the second-most likely film to win, with a 51.90% probability. It is gaining popularity and its chances of winning could increase if the Academy Board wishes to see anything different than an Oppenheimer reign at the Oscars. In this case, Poor Things will be the go-to.

American Fiction is another strong competitor in this category with a 47.07% result based on its wins and nominations. The film acquired the Critics’ Choice Award and the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay increasing its chances of winning the Oscar.

Barbie’s low score on our chart (34.49%) comes from the fact that it won the Critics’ Choice award for Best Original Screenplay, but in January, it was switched from the Original Screenplay to the Adapted Screenplay category for the Academy Awards. Some critics believe this reassignment is Barbie’s chance to win over Oppenheimer in a major category.

Best International Feature Film

The indisputable favorite in this category, also nominated for Best Picture, is The Zone of Interest with a 47.96% result. It is this year’s British contestant, although the film is predominantly in German. The movie was also a runner-up at the Cannes Festival for the Palme d’Or which supports its claims for the Oscar furthermore.

Society of the Snow, inspired by the true events of the 1972 Andes Disaster, comes in second with a 31.97% probability, as it quickly gained popularity on the Netflix streaming platform. The film is Spain’s choice for this year’s Academy Awards and is the only other one, along with The Zone of Interest, nominated at the BAFTAs for Film Not in the English Language. The British film, however, prevailed and won the award earlier this month.

France surprised the film industry by not picking Anatomy of a Fall as their entry for the Best International Feature Film and rather selecting The Taste of Things as their contestant, which didn’t even make it to the nominees. If Justine Triet’s movie had been submitted, it would have put The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall in direct competition not only for the Best Picture category but also for the International Feature Film Award.

Best Cinematography

Given Oppenheimer‘s remarkable success so far, Hoyte van Hoytema’s win for Best Cinematography seems almost sealed. So far, Hoytema has been nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers, the BAFTAs, and the Academy Awards—the three biggest cinematography awards— on multiple occasions, but he’s always been just one step away from the prize for all three. This year, however, he finally triumphed at the BAFTAs and currently is the clear favorite for the Oscars with odds estimated at 77.28%.

Killers of the Flower Moon and Barbie, two exceptionally well-performing movies in 2023, featured cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto, who is the next Academy Award nominee. So far, he has been honored with awards from the National Society of Film Critics and the National Board of Review, among other prestigious committees which is why his winning probability on our list (61.16%) is relatively high.

Poor Things’ cinematographer Robbie Ryan is the third most likely to win based on pure statistics (45.10%), though many consider his contrasting work and play with lenses Academy Award-worthy, referring to him as the hidden gem of this year’s nominations.

Best Original Score

Ludwig Göransson’s accompanying soundtrack for Oppenheimer is his second nomination for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards and with a substantial lead of 81.57%, it would most likely be his second win as well, after his success in 2019 with Black Panther. Oppenheimer’s journey is underlined by a well-thought-out musical background throughout every scene, resulting in undisputed victories for Göransson at the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Grammys and the BAFTAs.

Robbie Robertson, who passed away shortly after completing the score for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, is the second-most likely to receive the Oscar with a 51.10% chance. The film is dedicated to Robertson, who was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award.

Jerskin Fendrixis takes third place with a 48.27% chance of winning, for his work in Poor Things. At age 29, the musician is the youngest contender this year, and this Academy Award nomination marks one of his first-ever professional accolades.

Best Song

Since La La Land in 2017, this year’s Barbie film is the first one to have two songs nominated for the Best Song category. Many predicted Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” would be included among the candidates as well, since it became one of the artist’s most successful songs to date. The Academy’s regulation, however, allows no more than two songs from a movie to be nominated and Lipa’s hit didn’t make it to the Oscar’s list.

The two songs that are currently tied for first place in our chart are the famous “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, both with 70.75%. However, Eilish and her brother have a slight advantage, as their track won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking their second Grammy in this category after their 2021 victory with “No Time To Die”.

Eilish’s current song won the Golden Globe for Best Song, while “I’m Just Ken” won the Critics’ Choice award in the same category, which gives them 10 points apiece in our ranking, resulting in a draw for first place.

None of the other nominated songs have received any recognition from any of the film festivals and awards that we looked at, making Barbie’s triumph almost guaranteed.

Best Visual Effects

Making history at the 96th Academy Awards is Godzilla Minus One. In the 70-year history of the franchise, the 37th movie is the first to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Visual Effects category. The most remarkable thing is that the film received a nomination even though it has a budget of less than $15 million.

For comparison, the previous movie from the franchise: Godzilla vs. Kong cost between $155 and $200 million. Normally, the budget of the nominees for Best Visual Effects hovers around $100 to $250 million. Great examples are this year’s Napoleon ($130–200 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($250 million) and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ($290 million).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was also nominated for Best Visual Effects in 2015 and is considered the most expensive film ever made, estimated at around $447 million.

Following Ex Machina‘s win in 2015, which was also estimated to have had a budget of $15 million, Godzilla Minus One is the first film in eight years to be nominated for Best Visual Effects with a production cost this low.

However, the odds for the most likely film to win this category favor The Creator. The film landed more nominations on esteemed award ceremonies than its competitors and won the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Best Visual Effects, resulting in a lead of 52.15%.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is also the first movie from its franchise to receive a nomination for an Oscar and it’s the second most likely to win the award with a rating of 48.04%.

Best Costume Design & Best Production Design

Although Barbie is unlikely to win in most of the major categories we’ve covered so far, there is still light at the end of the tunnel for the doll-inspired flick. Barbie was honored at several award ceremonies for its creative costumes and production design, resulting in a leading score for both categories, respectively, with 76.52% and 84.95%.

Poor Things overcame Barbie at the BAFTAs for Best Costume Design & Best Production Design, but Greta Gerwig’s pink fantasy comedy prevailed at the Critics’ Choice awards, leaving Barbie with an advantage for both Oscars.

Methodology

For this analysis, the team at BonusInsider decided to make our Oscar predictions based on critics’ and public opinion of the films and individuals nominated in fifteen major categories at the 96th Academy Awards. We looked at some of the largest and most prestigious festivals and award ceremonies in the film industry for the 2023/24 awards season. These included:

The Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, The National Board of Review Awards, The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), The Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards, The Los Angeles Film Critics’ Association, The New York Film Critics Circle Awards, The National Society of Film Critics Awards, The Online Film Critics Society Awards, The Satellite Awards, The Grammy Awards, The Capri Hollywood International Film Festival, The Saturn Awards, The Toronto International Film Festival, The Cannes International Film Festival, The Berlin International Film Festival, and The Venice Film Festival.

For each of the 15 major categories, we checked the nominees’ awards and nominations from the above festivals. We awarded each win with 10 points, while each nomination brought in 5 points. However, we also wanted to take the audiences’ opinions of each film, so we looked up the nominated titles on the Internet Movie Database, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. To make these ratings usable, we converted them to a 1-10 scale and added them to the overall score of each film.

We also included the number of Oscar nominations each film has in other categories; for instance, we gave Oppenheimer 12 points when calculating its chances of winning the Best Picture category. Historically, dramas have been preferred to comedies and musical films by the Academy in this category, which is why we gave an extra 5 points to every drama nominated for Best Picture.

To make the rankings easier to comprehend, we converted each nominee’s final score into a percentage. It represents each nominee’s individual chances of winning rather than a comparison with the other contenders.

Who is the Most Successful Artist of All Time at the Grammys?

The nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards have just been announced by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Music fans all over the world will be looking forward to the main event on Sunday 4th February 2024, when the awards are handed out.

The Grammys are probably the most prestigious awards in the music industry. And because they’re so well regarded, they’re sometimes used as a measure of the level of success different artists have had. Beyonce, for example, has won more Grammys than anyone else, and sometimes people say she’s the most successful artist of all time because of this.

This sounds like too simple a metric, though, doesn’t it? Can looking at Grammy wins alone tell us who the best artists of all time really are? What about artists who have only released a few hit songs? Or artists who aren’t looking for a broad appeal? Surely just looking at wins alone only shows us artists who have had long careers, appealed to a wide range of people or released a huge amount of material.

Here at BonusInsider, we thought we’d look at the stats on the Grammy Awards in more depth to see if there are better ways of measuring musical success. We dug around in the numbers to find if we could remove things like career length, mass appeal and volume of musical material from the equation. We wanted to look at artists in a much more direct and clear way.

Looking at Grammy Success in More Depth

Beyonce’s a pop star with wide appeal who’s been in the music industry for 26 years. Surely, you’d expect her to pick up some awards in that time. Is she really more successful than Nirvana? Nirvana won 6 Grammys, compared to Beyonce’s 32, but who had the most impact on music and who’s had the most fans throughout the years?

While some artists have long careers and produce hundreds of records, others don’t have so many songs to sing, but maybe their impact on music is just as good or even greater, somehow.

What we decided to do first was look at the number of Grammys different artists have won in relation to the number of singles they’ve released. After this, we then looked at the number of times artists have been nominated for a Grammy, compared to the number of times they’d actually won, to see how many times they had lost a nomination.

Why Did We Look at Singles and Nominations?

We decided to look at the number of singles each artist had released because we believe that just being a prolific artist doesn’t necessarily make you a good one. There are certain artists who have had a broad appeal through the years and released a vast amount of music, and they seem to be favoured unfairly in the award stakes. Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, and Ray Charles, for example, all seem like they might be artists who get a lot of recognition for their long careers and wide appeal.

What if you compare one of these artists to Adele? Hasn’t Adele been hugely successful in the awards without having tried anywhere near as hard?

We decided to look at the number of nominations lost to see what happens when things are put up for a vote in the Recording Academy; they vote for the Grammys and the approximately 12,000 people who vote in the Recording Academy are highly knowledgeable musicians, producers and recording engineers. They can, perhaps, give a more balanced account of who the best artists really are.

We gathered up the numbers for every Grammy winner with over 10 Grammys, and then we did the maths. We found 71 artists with 10 or more awards, and of them 49 are non-classical performing artists; these are the artists we focussed on.

Here are the biggest things we found out:

  • There are lots of artists who have had a lot of success with only a relatively small number of songs. Half of our first top twenty list are artists who are sometimes forgotten about
  • When the votes are cast at the Grammys, there are also lots of slightly lesser-known, but hugely influential, artists who get more recognition than they do just through their number of wins alone
  • Some of the big Grammy winners, like Alicia Keys, Paul Simon and Beyonce, are still big winners with our new metrics; they might drop a few places, but they’re still at the top of their game
  • Some artists you might have thought were huge drop out completely when you switch up the numbers. Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney are all artists who, maybe, get more recognition than they deserve based purely on Grammy wins

The Most Successful Artists by Ratio of Singles to Grammy Awards

The first thing we looked at was the number of singles compared to the number of Grammy Awards an artist has won.

Here are the most successful Grammy artists according to a ratio of singles released to Grammy Awards won. You can refer to the list at the end of the article, to see a simple ranking of artists according to the total number of Grammys they’ve won.

Here are some of the most interesting results:

  • Compared to the list of artists with the most Grammy awards wins, George Harrison, Bobby McFerrin, John Legend, Bonnie Raitt, Eminem, Bruno Mars, the Chicks, Lady Gaga, and Pharrell Williams have all entered the top 20 when the release to wins ratio is applied. That’s 10 artists, and exactly half of the original top 20, replaced by analysing their success with this new metric
  • Of the new entrants, Pharrell Williams is arguably the most notable, having gone to number 3 on the list from number 33. It should be noted that he has won 3 awards as a producer rather than as a singer, but his ratio of 22 singles to 13 Grammy wins is still impressive. Bruno Mars has also jumped an impressive 17 places to near the top of the list. The Chicks have also made a big jump from number 37 up to number 5
  • The ten artists who left the original top 20 are Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pat Metheny, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles and Kirk Franklin. They have won a lot of Grammy awards but they have also released tons of singles throughout their careers

Beyonce vs Adele

As we mentioned earlier, one notable finding is that according to this metric, Beyonce is not as successful as Adele. Adele takes the number one spot, and she is only one song off a perfect ratio! That’s quite astonishing when you look at the ratio other artists have. Adele has a ratio of 0.94, with 17 singles and 16 Grammy Awards. Beyonce, on the other hand, has slipped to 6th place, with a still impressive ratio of 0.38.

Grammys Won vs Grammys Lost

The next statistic we looked at was the number of Grammy Awards each artist had won compared the number of nominations they’d had. This gave us the number of times they had actually lost and what percent of their nominations they have won.

If we look at the total number of Grammys lost, we can easily see that there are no artists with a clean sweep (no lost Grammys), but there are some who’ve done pretty well. Those with the least losses are Carlos Santana, Ella Fitzgerald, and Roger Miller, while those with the most lost Grammys are Alison Krauss, Jay-Z, and Paul McCartney. Those “losers”, however, are also the ones with the most nominations. In other words, the more you are nominated, the more likely it is you will lose; that’s pretty logical since at every awards there are many nominations, but only one winner.

It is much more interesting to see what percentage of the nominations each artist have actually won. These are the biggest Grammy winners when we consider how many times artists have been nominated and the times they have won.

As you can see Mexican-born American guitarist Carlos Santana has had the best score over the years with 10 Grammys out of 14 nominations or a 71.43% win rate. The Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, ranks second with 13 awards and a 65% success rate at the Grammys, followed by English singer-songwriter Adele who has 16 Grammys, which is 64% of her nominations.

Interestingly, there are three entries all sharing 10th place, namely Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, and CeCe Winans. Each of them has been nominated 31 times and won 15 Grammys, giving them a success rate of 48.39%.

Willie Nelson, on the other hand, is the biggest “loser” in this regard, having been nominated 57 times but winning only 10 Grammy awards. Other artists with a low success rate are Dolly Parton, Babyface, Paul McCartney, and Taylor Swift.

Snoop Dogg’s Bad Luck at the Grammys

Did you know that Snoop Dog has had 17 Grammy nominations without a single win? That’s right. Snoop Dogg has been up 17 times without ever receiving a win. It just goes to show that there’s no comprehensive way of ranking the success of an artist with just the Grammys alone. Snoop Dogg isn’t just a successful rap artist, he’s also hugely influential, and judging him on Grammys alone isn’t fair at all.

Methodology

The methodology behind this study was relatively simple. What we did was trawl through the records on the Grammys website as well as through various other online resources to get all our raw data on Grammy Awards and Grammy nominations. We then used Wikipedia and Mojim to find out how many singles each artist had released as well.

We compiled statistics for:

  • Every Grammy winner that has won over 10 Grammy Awards
  • The number of singles each of these artists has released, either as a band or solo artist
  • The number of times each of these artists has been nominated for a Grammy

We then looked at various comparisons and ratios to get the ranking charts we’ve shown you. You can see our input data for the top 40 artists ranked by number of Grammy Award wins at the bottom of the page.

Note that we only counted non-classical performing artists on our list.

Difficult Artists – Pat Metheny and Bobby McFerrin

Everything was simple except when it came to Pat Metheny* and Bobby McFerrin*. All the other artists in the dataset were artists with a reliable enough history of releasing songs as singles to successfully use their total number of singles released.

Pat Metheny and Bobby McFerrin are different. Pat Metheny is a band artist who mainly produces albums, and we couldn’t use his singles released total as a reliable metric. Bobby McFerrin has featured in a lot of singles, but he’s well known as a collaborative artist, and he’s collaborated on many more singles than he’s released as a solo artist.

What we did to overcome this was include Pat Metheny’s album releases alongside his single releases to give a more reliable figure. He’s always been an album artist and has been judged more according to his albums. This should be fairly reliably reflected in his Grammy history. For Bobby McFerrin, we included his singles as a collaborative artist alongside his singles as a solo artist.

Conclusion

In conclusion, looking at the total number of Grammy wins an artist has is a useful metric. There’s no simple way of looking at things after all, and it does give you the most basic, but perhaps the most honest account of an artist’s level of success. Who’s to say that just existing in the charts for a long time and having a broad appeal isn’t a great achievement anyway? As such, it’s still very much worthwhile to look at total Grammy wins when measuring a musician’s success levels.

We believe, however, that our study shows that it’s worth looking deeper into the numbers. Looking at the ratio of singles released to Grammys won reveals there are a number of artists who have had a big impact in relatively short periods of time. Adele is one, and she gained most of her success at the very start of her career. She’s also still loved all over the world for the work she did then as well. There’s more to think about when it comes to this metric as well.

Looking at Grammy nominations also tells you a lot about what artists think about other fellow artists. The public as a whole tends to vote in predictable ways, and they also tend to fail to give recognition to artists with a less broad appeal. The people who vote for the Grammys, however, are musicians themselves, and they appreciate good music, whether it has a mass appeal or not. This is a rather more ambiguous figure, but it does give us food for thought.

TikTok’s top wellness trends for 2024

As we step into the 2024 year, people all around the world are embracing the “New Year, New Me” mindset, determined to leave their bad habits behind and improve their overall well-being. As a result, the wellness industry is booming, with wellness-related content experiencing a surge in popularity on social media at the close of 2023.

TikTok has established itself as a leading social media platform, particularly among Gen Z (the generation currently aged 10 to 25). With 1.7 billion active users globally (out of which 1.1 billion are its monthly active users), a figure projected to reach two billion by the end of 2024, it is the second app after Facebook to surpass 3 billion all-time downloads and now boasts an impressive 4.7 billion as per the latest reports.

TikTok’s popularity has resulted in the platform’s increasing cultural impact worldwide as viral content often influences broader cultural trends. Many users share their goals, routines and tips, which inspire others to adopt healthier habits and pursue personal growth. According to the latest reports the global health and wellness market was valued at US$ 3,670 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 5,155 billion by 2032 at a growth rate of 3.69% during 2024-2032.

On TikTok, wellness trends are often displayed through short videos promoting various health and self-care practices for improving overall well-being. A relaxed approach to exercise, healthy recipe demonstrations, mindful journaling and digital detoxes are just a few examples.

This year consider doing some Girl Therapy!

(151.6B combined TikTok views)

If you’re active on TikTok, you are probably already familiar with concepts such as Girl Math (women’s strategy for justifying large or unnecessary purchases) and Girl Dinner (meals made of snacks or small amounts of random foods), as these two trends have been blowing up the platform’s feeds in the past year. But have you ever heard of Girl Therapy? With over 150b combined views of its related hashtags, it is the top wellness trend expected to dominate TikTok in 2024, according to our research. But what exactly is it, and should you try it out?

As we scroll through TikTok it turns out that Girl Therapy could mean different things for everyone. For most creators it involves activities such as taking an “everything shower” (at-home spa session), lighting a candle, enjoying a cute dessert, reading a book, trying some new hairstyles, getting your nails done, screaming to Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo’s songs, treating yourself to a shopping spree— the list goes on!

At its core, Girl Therapy is a phenomenon that promotes self-care: setting healthy boundaries, making yourself a priority and doing what you love. Jump on the trend!

Become the ultimate It Girl with TikTok’s glow-up hacks

(123.4B combined TikTok views)

Do you remember the glow-up trend from a few years ago where you try to become more conventionally attractive within a short time while documenting the process and sharing your before-and-after transformation? Well, TikTokers now support the concept of a more sustainable glow-up process that includes improvements in your social life, career, finances, spiritual health etc. With over 120b combined views of its related hashtags, this is the second-best wellness trend on our list that is predicted to dominate TikTok feeds in 2024.

The whole glow-up process is often associated with another wellness practice on TikTok that gained popularity in 2021— becoming “That Girl”. The one who wakes up at 5 AM, meditates, journals, drinks healthy smoothies, goes to the gym every day and wears minimal makeup. Looking ahead to 2024, That Girl is expected to rebrand as an It Girl, upon the release of Aliyah’s Interlude “IT GIRL” on September 30, 2023, which went viral on TikTok and soundtracked more than 912,000 videos by November 2023.

Similarly, an It Girl is someone who receives much respect for her personality, character, intelligence, education and outstanding taste in clothes and lifestyle. From setting your day off on the right foot with a five-minute morning yoga stretch to tailoring your wardrobe to fit your body type and personal style, to creating a skin and hair care routine and sticking it, TikTok’s glow-up tips will help you become the ultimate It Girl in the new year ahead!

Manifest your way through 2024 by vision boarding

(59.2B combined TikTok views)

If you’re looking for a way to achieve your goals and make your dreams come true, TikTok’s vision boards are the way to go. And believe it or not, there’s an actual science behind this!

A vision board is a physical or digital representation of our dreams and goals. It involves creating a collage of images, quotes, and affirmations that reflect the things we want to attract into our lives. When we practice deep manifestation and visualization, our brain cannot tell the difference between an imagined event and a real one. In that way, consistently visualizing what our future could look like helps our brain see it as a reality and bring it to fruition.

Studies have shown that setting specific goals than general ones leads to a higher level of task performance. Take the time to reflect on the past year and think about the changes you want to make and the routines and hobbies you wish to adopt in the future. When you figure out your dreams and place them on a board, you can look to them for inspiration each day to maintain your focus and motivation throughout the year. This could mean anything from a new exciting travel destination to an image of your dream college or career.

Some of the best vision board tips can be found on TikTok as the trend has been making waves on the platform with over 50b combined views of its related hashtags. Make sure to check them out!

You know how the saying goes: “Clean home, clean mind”!

While some individuals turn to activities like meditation or mindfulness when they are feeling overwhelmed, others find that wiping down the kitchen or organising the closet is equally beneficial for their mental well-being.

Studies have shown that people with messy or cluttered homes have higher stress and anxiety levels, which can lead to poor sleep quality and lowered metabolism. Oppositely, having a clean and organized house leads to a better mindset and improved mental health.

Cleaning and organizing hacks have been taking over TikTok’s feeds in 2023 and are predicted to be prevalent in 2024 as well, with 49.8b combined views of the trend’s related hashtags. Studies have confirmed that journaling can have incredibly positive effects on our emotional and mental well-being. TikTok journaling comes in many different shapes and forms and it’s whatever you make of it! Healthy Habits Development

(11.6B combined TikTok views)

Looking for a way to incorporate a new activity into your routine? Try habit stacking!

Habit stacking is a simple, yet effective technique that involves linking a new habit you want to develop with an already existing one so that the two become intertwined in your brain. TikTokers swear by it as a new and more effective approach to personal development that fits seamlessly into the rhythm of modern life.

For example, if you want to start a habit of meditating every day, you might “stack” it onto your existing morning routine by meditating for a few minutes right after getting out of the shower. Keep doing this every day and it will soon become just as much a part of your routine as the shower itself.

Try listening to an audiobook every time you’re doing laundry or doing a few sets of push-ups whenever you watch a TV show. As time goes by, it will become less and less of a task and more and more of a habit that you’re used to.

Here’s to a healthier and more harmonious lifestyle in the new year! For more healthy habits explore the hashtags above!

TikTok’s wellness trends that could not make it to the top 10 list but are still predicted to dominate the platform in 2024:

Methodology

The methodology behind this research was relatively simple.

First, our team analyzed trending TikToks from December 2023, sorted by like count, under the #newyearresolution and #wellness hashtags.

Then, we examined all of the relevant hashtags, which could be classed as wellness trends, used in the caption section of each video. We came up with a total of 20 trends that appeared the most and ranked them by the combined number of views of each trend’s most popular related hashtags.

In the end, we selected the best TikTok video we could find that explains the trend as accurately as possible and included a link.

Top Set-Jetting Destinations for 2024

The popularity of streaming platforms and the rise of binge watching over the past few years have created a new travel trend, set-jetting. It highlights the places where films have been shot. “Star Wars” fans are instantly reminded of the abandoned set of the Mos Espa spaceport, a fictional city from “The Phantom Menace” and “Episode II Attack of the Clones”. The city was built specifically for those two films and although it is in the heart of the Tunisian desert, it is extremely popular among tourists and fans of the sci-fi saga.

Visiting the filming locations of iconic movies isn’t new but set-jetting has exploded in the past year and is likely to shape the travel industry in 2024 and beyond. Having our own guilty pleasures (Bridgerton, of course), the team at BonusInsider was curious to find out where the most anticipated films and TV series of 2024 had been filmed. We compiled a list of fifteen new and upcoming titles and identified their filming locations to come up with a handy guide to the best set-jetting destinations for 2024.

The Top 10 Set-Jetting Destinations to Visit in 2024

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

The first entry on this list is Australia’s largest city, Sydney, which has plenty of famous tourist sites such as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Of course, the peak summer season from December to February is not recommended; a better time to visit would be March through May and from September to November.

Movie enthusiasts know well that the city has been one of the popular filming locations for Hollywood productions because of its striking cityscapes and unique areas that surround it. One of the productions filmed here is the upcoming David Leitch film “The Fall Guy”, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The action comedy used several filming locations across the city, including the pedestrian zone Martin Place, the Sydney Opera House, and the suburb of Kurnell. Some of the scenes were also shot at the Disney Studios, Moore Park in Sydney.

One of the most anticipated premieres of 2024, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, was shot entirely in the state of New South Wales, including its capital Sydney. Along with Kurnell, the other suburb that served as a set to the movie, was Melrose Park. The main filming locations, however, were all over the Australian outback such as the frontier mining town of Broken Hill, and the village of Silverton. Silverton, in particular, has that desert, post-apocalyptic vibe; with a population of around 50, it is practically a ghost town.

Another movie shot across several Sydney locations is “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, which is expected to be released in May of next year. The film is set many years after the reign of Caesar and stars Owen Teague in the lead role, “The Witcher”’s Freya Allan, as well as Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.

London, England, UK

For decades, London has been among the most featured cities in film and television so it is hardly a surprise that it comes second on this list. Film-makers seem to be infatuated with its charm, no shortage of historical landmarks, royal residences, and centuries-old architecture. Certain scenes of “The Crown: Season 6” and “Bridgerton: Season 3” were also filmed here.

The sixth series of the “Crown” includes scenes with President Clinton set in Chicago, but the production never left the UK. London’s Canary Wharf serves as a fake, yet perfectly believable Chicago. Plenty of London locations can be seen in “Bridgerton”, too. Along with the Ranger’s House next to Greenwich Park (its exterior is used for the home of the Bridgerton family in the show), other places you can recognise are the Royal Naval College and the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul, which is located inside the Royal Naval College.

One of 2024’s biggest movies, “Wonka”, has also travelled to London for shooting. The star-studded film, which is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, features Timothée Chalamet in the lead role, alongside Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson. Some of the scenes were filmed in the Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, south-east London. This is the only ballroom from the 1950s in London that has been kept in its original condition, including red velvet, chandeliers, and Chinese lanterns. All these locations are open for visitors – the Rivoli actually hosts many music and dance events.

Prague, Czech Republic

Third on the list of the best set-jetting destinations for 2024 is Prague. The capital city of the Czech Republic is wonderful to visit all year round, although, in the summer, visitors can expect huge crowds and elevated prices, while the winter is quite cold and snowy (the Christmas markets, however, are worth it). Spring and autumn, on the other hand, might be the best time to visit, especially in September when the weather is still warm, the prices are more affordable, and there are fewer crowds at popular tourist sites.

One of the movies filmed in the city is “Ballerina” (release expected in June), a spin-off of the “John Wick” franchise, starring Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Norman Reedus. Among the filming locations are the Old Town of Prague, including Dlouhá Street famous for its bars and nightlife, and around the National Theatre of Prague. The crew also shot in Ostrava and the small town of Štramberk.

Another upcoming movie filmed in Prague is the gothic horror “Nosferatu”, a remake of the iconic German 1922 film of the same name. The film, which will be released on Christmas Day 2024, stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, and Nicholas Hoult, and is based on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. Some scenes were also shot in the town of Rožmitál pod Třemšínem.

Fort Ricasoli, Malta

Another set-jetting location worth visiting is Fort Ricasoli, the largest fort in Malta (and in Europe), which is situated in the village of Kalkara. It was built in the 17th century by the Order of Saint John and has been used for various purposes over the years. Today, it is in a mostly dilapidated state, despite the ongoing restoration efforts, and can be visited by tourists. The best time for this would be spring and early summer (April to June) when there are fewer crowds and the days are not yet too hot.

Fort Ricasoli will feature extensively in the upcoming “Gladiator 2”, a sequel to the epic 2000 movie, which won five Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Actor (Russell Crowe). The original had also been partially shot at the Maltese fort and now, 23 years later, director Ridley Scott decided to return to this location. The second instalment stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsoum and Pedro Pascal, and is scheduled to hit the theatres in November 2024.

The bastioned fort has been a popular filming location for a number of Hollywood productions over the past few decades. Among the most famous productions shot there are “Troy”, “Game of Thrones”, “Assassin’s Creed”, and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” with Joaquin Phoenix, which was released in November of this year. If you remember, Phoenix also starred in the original “Gladiator”.

Bourne Wood, England, UK

Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix and the historical drama “Napoleon” he stars in, the film has a huge number of filming locations. Rather than using CGI, Ridley Scott had decided to use real-life locations that could pass as the places featured in the story. Along with Malta’s Ricasoli Fort, the crew went to the Lincoln Cathedral in Lincolnshire to shoot the scenes of Napoleon’s coronation. The cathedral was a substitute for the Notre-Dame in Paris. In fact, the production filmed extensively across England and one of the places featured in “Napoleon” is Bourne Wood in Surrey.

The wood has been widely used as a filming location for many Holywood productions over the past few decades, including “Gladiator”, “Band of Brothers”, “The Golden Compass”, “Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince”, “Robin Hood”, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”, “The Witcher: Season 2”, as well as several Marvel blockbusters. Some scenes from this year’s spy TV show “Citadel” with Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas were also shot there.

In addition, the wood was one of the filming locations for “House of the Dragon: Season 2”, the highly successful “Game of Thrones” spin-off show with Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith. While most of the shooting took place in Wales, certain scenes were set in this large Surrey forest. It’s a wonderful hiking destination, just south of the town of Farnham and pretty close to the famous filming location of Hankley Common in Elstead. The best time to visit is from June to September, although it is pleasant in spring and autumn, too.

Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian capital is probably one of the most beautiful European cities and in recent decades, it has become a hot production hub for filming crews from all over the world. It has plenty of breathtaking places you can shoot (or visit), it has world-class filming studios, and highly skilled and experienced professionals you can hire. Not to mention the financial incentives (affordability and a 30% cash rebate) when an international production comes to Hungary.

Budapest ranks fourth on this list, although the number of movies filmed here over the past couple of years, is huge. The reason why it caught our attention is “Poor Things”, a Frankenstein-type fantasy and black comedy with Emma Stone, which premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on the 1st of September. The film took home the Golden Lion but is yet to be seen by the masses – while it hit the U.S. theatres on the 8th of December, its release in the UK is set for the 12th of January.

While some of the scenes were shot in Glasgow (the film is set there), Budapest served as several other cities, namely London, Paris, and Lisbon. This is not unusual, however; it was recently used in the thriller series “The Fear Index” to be Geneva, for instance. It was also a filming location for “The Last Kingdom”, “Halo”, and “Dune”. In fact, the crew of “Dune: Part Two” worked on certain scenes in one of the best studios in Budapest.

Buckinghamshire, UK

For this entry on the list, we decided to include not a specific location but a wider area, the English county of Buckinghamshire, in particular. At least two of the big Hollywood productions set for a 2024 release have been partially shot here.

One of them is the musical film “Wicked”, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo and was filmed over the past year at a huge set built on a farm in Ivinghoe, a village between Leighton Buzzard and Tring. The set, complete with colourful cottages and a yellow brick road, transformed the farm into the land of Oz. Unfortunately, it was demolished once filming was completed but visitors can still enjoy the spectacular countryside of the Aylesbury Vale in and around Ivinghoe.

Next year’s Marvel movie “Deadpool 3” with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was also shot in the UK and one of its filming locations is quite close to that of “Wicked”. One of the sets for the superhero movie is Pitstone Quarry, which is roughly 1.3 miles south of Ivinghoe. Reynolds and Jackman were spotted in their costumes and makeup doing a fight scene at the former chalk quarry, which is within the College Lake nature reserve. Other scenes have also been filmed on Holkham Beach in Norfolk, across London, as well as at Pinewood Studios, in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Speaking of the second instalment of the sci-fi epic “Dune”, we must take a look at one of its major filming locations, the Wadi Rum area in Jordan, which “plays” the desert world of Arrakis, also known as Dune. Wadi Rum is a protected desert valley in the southeast of Jordan, around two hours from Petra and close to the border with Saudi Arabia. The landscape here is otherworldly – the valley is surrounded by huge red rock formations, and the rusty red sands evoke comparisons to Mars.

Indeed, the Wadi Rum, which is the tribal home of the Bedouins, was not used to recreate only the harsh conditions of Arrakis in “Dune”. The 1962 classic “Lawrence of Arabia” was shot there, while more recent productions that took advantage of the stunning Jordanian landscape were “The Martian”, “Star Wars: Rogue One” and “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker”, “Prometheus”, and “The Mummy”, among others.

Other filming locations for “Dune: Part Two”, whose premiere was delayed for 2024 due to the Hollywood strikes, were the deserts around Abu Dhabi, studios in Hungary, and the town of Altivole in Italy. The small Italian commune is located in the Province of Treviso and was used for filming the House Corrino home on the planet Kaitain. Caladan, the ancestral home of House Atreides, on the other hand, which was shown in the first movie, was filmed in Norway’s Stadlandet.

Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

One of the most remote destinations on this list, Blyde River Canyon is a large canyon in the Province of Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is reportedly one of the several filming locations for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two”, which is expected in May 2025. Tom Cruise was seen multiple times all over South Africa in the summer of 2023, with photos of him in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo being posted on social media.

According to South African news outlets, some of the action in the 8th instalment of the franchise will be set in Blyde River Canyon. This is a quite popular tourist destination for South Africans and foreigners alike, attracting thousands of people with its stunning natural beauty and unique sites such as the Bourke’s Luck Potholes or the cliffs known as God’s Window.

We could have chosen many other exciting places across South Africa for this position on the list such as the town of Hoedspruit and the surrounding area, the resort town of Port Edward, or Cape Town. The upcoming movie was also reportedly filmed on the Arctic islands off the coast of Norway. The shooting at the archipelago of Svalbard, which is halfway between Norway and the North Pole, was completed in the spring. Blyde River Canyon, however, is truly picturesque and almost out of this world, and unlike the Norwegian islands, it is green and warm due to its subtropical climate.

Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

Australia makes another appearance on the list of top 10 set-jetting destinations for 2024 but this time with the city of Gold Coast, Queensland. This is one of the major beach destinations in Australia and is famous for its surfing beaches, theme parks, and nightlife. Gold Coast is popular among tourists because of its warm, sunny weather (roughly 300 days of sunshine a year), paired with the lush greenery and the rainforests of the Hinterland.

Two of the Gold Coast beaches, Surfers Paradise Beach and the Glitter Strip, are among the filming locations for the upcoming film “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”. The action movie, which is part of the MonsterVerse, is the 38th film of the Godzilla franchise and the 13th King Kong movie. It is expected to hit theatres in April of 2024.

So, Where Are You Heading To Next?

Set-jetting is not just about travelling to beautiful places; it is about experiencing the filming location of your favourite movie or TV series; about breathing the same air the cast and crew had breathed; it’s also about experiencing the local culture as they (hopefully) did. The list of travel destinations we compiled is in no way exhaustive; however, it aims at diversity, featuring places all over the world.

Among the new and upcoming films with filming locations that were left out from the top 10 are “Captain America: Brave New World”, which was filmed in Washington, DC, and “Beetlejuice 2”, which is being shot in East Corinth, Vermont, USA. This is the filming location of the original 1988 film, so it is not particularly interesting for fans of the franchise or of Tim Burton’s work. We also did not include Lyme Regis in Dorset, for instance, which was one of the filming locations for “Wonka”. The town sits on the Jurassic Coast and is famous for its fossils but the location featured in the film is its harbour wall, which is not very exciting.

Methodology

To compile the list of the top 10 set-jetting destinations for 2023, the team at BonusInsider checked the filming locations of some of the most anticipated movies and TV series of 2024. We also included titles released around the end of this year. Animated movies, however, were not considered, as well as films, whose filming locations and other production details have been kept secret. Those titles that were filmed solely or primarily in studios were not included, too.

We then picked those destinations that came up the most, ranking them by the number of films or TV productions they were featured in. In the case of London and Sydney, which have an even number of productions associated with them, we decided to rank Sydney higher simply because the UK’s capital was probably the most expected filming location for the two TV series shot there.

The Hottest Video Games of 2023

While exploring the vast land of Hyrule, or maybe on your way to Hell and back— a gripping question grabbed our attention: Are the most searched 2023 video games on Google also topping the overall charts this year? To answer this question we checked both Metacritic and OpenCritic’s 2023 ranking lists and compared their score. Here is what we found!

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is splitting the first place with Baldur’s Gate 3 on both websites. They have the highest ranking score of 96 points, thus becoming the best 2023 video games on these lists;
  • Resident Evil 4 takes the 5th place on OpenCritic with a 92 score overall, while on Metacritic it is in 7th position having a score of 93 points;
  • EA Sports FC 24 is surprisingly way behind on both websites’ rankings, with 74 and 78 average scores on OpenCritic and Metacritic, respectively;
  • Diablo IV comes 12th on Metacritic with Metascore of 91 points, while on OpenCritic it is further back in the rankings, coming at 30th position with an 88 average score.

Methodology

This report is based on Google search analysis. Google Trends has become a popular data source among researchers in a wide variety of fields. It allows us to track what people across different regions are searching for, over a certain period. We used Google Trends data to determine what the majority of people around the world were searching for within the Computer & Video Games category over the past 12 months (December 7, 2022—December 7, 2023). After identifying the most popular 2023 video game titles on Google, some of which scored 90 or higher on Metacritic and OpenCritic, we compared their relative search volume in a selection of 40 worldwide countries and then visualised our findings with a world map. Bear in mind that Google Trends provides relative data and doesn’t reveal the actual number of searches, which makes it more useful to observe trends and patterns rather than exact figures. Despite this limitation, Google Trends results are based on search volume and are therefore reliable. All data is correct at the time of writing.

But some of the most underrated, unique, and newly viral ski resorts are located in the most unexpected of places, with one on the California-Nevada border, and another in southern Africa.

Not to mention, there are penguins in the snow park, and in December children are welcome to meet Santa Claus. The Bottom Line

The list of fifty ski resorts is by no means exhaustive; we could have included another fifty resorts and there would still be places missing. Some famous European resorts, for instance, were replaced by little known destinations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. And, much to our surprise, some of them turned out to be more popular on social media than much talked-about resorts in Austria or the in United States, for instance.

Methodology

To identify the most popular ski resorts on social media, the team at BonusInsider focused on TikTok and Instagram, checking the popularity of some of the largest winter resorts in the world. On TikTok, we also used the following search terms: “ski resort,” “ski resorts,” “ski resort Europe,” “ski resort Africa,” “ski resort Asia,” “ski resort North America,” and “ski resort Switzerland” to find trending hashtags for ski resort destinations.

We filtered the results, starting with a baseline of hashtags with 2 million views and above. We then narrowed it down to the one to two million range, followed by the 500k to one million range, and finally, the 100k to 500k range. In total, we compiled a list of 50 destinations. For effective cross-referencing, we searched trending hashtags for each top destination on Instagram, and collated the combined hashtags with the most posts.

Additionally, we searched the internet to obtain destination-specific information such as total slope length (data from the SkiResorts website), the number of lifts, special attractions, and the price of a skiing day pass (adult rates during the regular season, purchased at the cash desk). We also converted the prices in Euro, using the exchange rates at the time of writing, 29 November 2023.

Revealed: The Most Memeworthy Songs with the Biggest Impact on Social Media

As streaming services and social media platforms grow in popularity, more and more artists join them, with some of them becoming huge online. The power of YouTube, Spotify, and most recently TikTok, is undeniable, turning talented artists into mega stars and catchy tunes into legendary, memeworthy songs. But which songs and artists do people listen to the most and which songs have had the greatest impact in the 21st century?

Our team at BonusInsider decided to analyse streaming data and social media hashtags to identify the most recognisable songs, which have been used in countless TikTok trends, viral challenges and Internet memes. These are the songs that reached the most people in the Internet age and have impacted us the most, sometimes in some pretty unexpected, indirect ways.

We picked the 30 most streamed songs on Spotify and checked their YouTube views, as well as the TikTok views of the hashtag that describes them best. The combined count gave us a ranking of the most popular and influential songs in the 21st century (so far).

The Power of Social Media and Streaming Platforms

In the past, album sales did not show which songs were people’s favourites; charts such as the Billboard Hot 100 use aggregate data to create the rankings (physical and digital sales, online streaming, and radio play in the U.S.). The digital nature of streaming data, however, allows us to see which songs are actually listened to the most by users.

According to a recent report by RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), streaming services have accounted for 84% of total recorded music revenue in the US for the first half of 2023. Revenue grew 10.3% YoY to $7 billion, while the number of paid subscriptions in the U.S. rose by 5.8 million YoY to 95.8 million. Clearly, platforms such as Spotify have largely replaced record stores but they have also been instrumental in dozens of music artists’ finding fame. Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendez, and Meghan Thee Stallion, who are now household names in the world of music, are just some of the stars who started as music enthusiasts on YouTube and Vine.

Top 5 Songs with the Biggest Impact on Social Media

The overall popularity of the songs we looked at, which is essentially the combined count of the YouTube views, Spotify streams, and TikTok hashtag views, reveals that the tunes with the biggest impact on social media have been released in 2017 and 2019. Some of these songs have become iconic to the pop culture of the past few years and will probably forever remain in history as not only famous hits but also widely shared memes.

Luis Fonsi – Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee (2017)

Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” a 2017 phenomenon, earned global acclaim for its irresistible blend of reggaeton and Latin pop. For months, the song was probably the most frequently aired song on radio; it was all over the TV and on social media, as well. The collaboration with Daddy Yankee’s infectious beats, and Fonsi’s sensual vocals catapulted it to unprecedented heights, holding the Billboard Hot 100 number one spot for 16 weeks. With over three billion Spotify streams, it not only dominated charts but also transcended language barriers.

Ed Sheeran – Shape of You (2017)

“Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran, a contagious fusion of pop and R&B, took the world by storm with its trendy sound, its radio-friendliness, and the fact that it was by Ed Sheeran. Released in 2017, it recently achieved a milestone on Apple Music as the most streamed song of all time, with over 930 million plays worldwide. Simultaneously, on Spotify, the song boasts over four billion streams, solidifying its status as the most celebrated track of its time.

The Weeknd – Blinding Lights (2019)

The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is a sonic journey through synth-pop euphoria. Released in 2019, its pulsating beats and emotive vocals have captivated listeners worldwide, while its lyrics (referencing driving under the influence) have sparked controversy. With close to four billion streams, the song not only dominated charts but also held the record for the longest-running song on the Billboard Hot 100 (90 weeks) until replaced by Glass Animals’ “Heatwave”.

The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk – Starboy (2016)

“Starboy” is The Weeknd’s second track on this ranking and for a good reason. Shortly after it was released in September 2016, it became the artist’s third number-one single and his first collaboration with French electronic music duo Daft Punk. At the time of writing, it has been streamed close to 3 billion times on Spotify and its video has been watched 2.3 billion times on YouTube.

Imagine Dragons – Believer (2017)

Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” is a blend of rock and electronic elements. The song’s powerful beats and resonant vocals showcase Imagine Dragons’ ability to create impactful, genre-defying music. Beyond its personal inspiration, ‘Believer’ highlights Imagine Dragons’ penchant for dynamic soundscapes and the ability to create distinctive fusions that resonate with diverse audiences. For the video of this epic-sounding song, one of Hollywood’s most legendary actors was cast, Dolph Lundgren, who played Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. At last count, the song has had nearly 3 billion Spotify streams, while its video – more than 2.5 billion views on YouTube.

Beyond commercial success, his influence lies in heartfelt lyrics and relatable narratives. Ed Sheeran is a defining figure in contemporary pop music.

Methodology

To identify the most streamed songs and artists of all time, we analysed data from the world’s most popular music streaming service, namely Spotify. Our team also looked at the current streaming data from Kworb. We then checked the popularity of these songs’ official videos on YouTube.

To see the tunes’ impact on the TikTok community, our team searched for the hashtags that best describe them. As the fastest-growing social media platform of the past few years, TikTok is an exciting space where various trends, challenges, and memes can reach millions of users within a matter of days or even hours. So, it is hardly surprising that hashtags such as #blindinglights or #shapeofyou have been extremely popular.

It should be noted, however, that for some of the songs, we had to pick TikTok hashtags, which are more specific because the title of the song is just too broad and the respective hashtag is used for other trending things, people, and songs on the platform. One such hashtag is #Rockstar – we cannot choose it for the Post Malone song, because there are several other popular songs with the same title (remember Nickleback’s “Rockstar”?). Instead, we took the view count for the #postmalonerockstar hashtag.

NCAA Adopts Changes to Rules Surrounding Sports Betting Penalties

NCAA Adopts Changes to Rules Surrounding Sports Betting PenaltiesThe National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Council Coordination Committee announced amendments to the rules that oversee sports betting penalties imposed on student-athletes. The update concerns individuals who have placed bets on teams that belong to their school, with the exception of wagers concerning student-athletes’ own teams.

As per the new rules, a sports player who has wagered on teams associated with their school will be suspended for one season and lose eligibility for one year. Additional consequences will involve the given student-athlete taking part in mandatory education programs surrounding sports betting rules and prevention. This will serve as one of the requirements students will need to meet in order to be reinstated.

The new guidelines are retroactive and will affect student-athletes whose wrongdoings were reported on May 2, 2023, or at a later date. The modifications will not, however, concern those whose bets involved the team they themselves played for. Moreover, student-athletes, coaches, and individuals involved with NCAA sports administration will still be prohibited from partaking in betting that has to do with sports sponsored by the association.

Council Coordination Committee Chair Jon Steinbrecher clarified that these changes should not be taken to mean that the committee encourages student-athletes to partake in gambling, nor does it entail that division members condone sports betting. Instead, the new rules were introduced with the aim of underscoring the importance of the “integrity of competition,” along with facilitating better education concerning the prevention of problem gambling and sports betting among student-athletes.

The NCAA’s Ultimate Goal is to Protect Student-Athletes

Previously, student-athletes who were caught wagering under the same circumstances faced permanent suspension. However, a month prior to the November announcement, the Collegiate Commissioners Association had asked the Division I Committee tasked with overseeing such matters to review the reinstatement rules. The reasons cited included the necessity of prioritizing the well-being of student-athletes and assisting them in recovering from problem gambling.

Efforts into safeguarding student-athletes were also made in relation to potential harassment they could face from gamblers. In light of the increasing legalization of sports betting across the USA, the NCAA disclosed its intention to negotiate with law markers and advocate for the introduction of measures that will concern betting-related harassment aimed at student-athletes and other individuals associated with NCAA college sports. According to the NCAA, the issue can be mitigated via the adoption of hotlines centered on the reporting of harassment and threats.

Other proposals had to do with the legal age for betting being set at 21. In addition, the association also advocated for the implementation of betting ad requirements, namely how such advertisements should include the aforementioned harassment hotline and details regarding problem gambling and the penalties surrounding sports betting-related harassment. The NCAA’s final proposal concerned sports betting revenue. According to the association, proceeds should go toward the funding of problem gambling education for student-athletes and other college students.

AGCO Fines PointsBet over Failure to Meet Responsible Gambling Requirements

This Thursday, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), announced that it had issued a notice of a $150,000 penalty on registered online sports betting operator, PointsBet Canada Operations 1 Inc., for failure to meet responsible gambling standards. Ontario’s regulatory agency, reporting to the Ministry of the Attorney General, stated a number of alleged breaches of the responsible gambling provisions of the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming.

When Ontario launched its iGaming market in 2022, the Registrar Standards for Internet Gaming came into force. Observing these standards of integrity, player protection, and adequate intervention when necessary are among AGCO’s main priorities.

Besides minimizing unlawful activity related to gaming, the standards aim to ensure a responsible gambling environment, player account management, game integrity, and player awareness, as well as public safety.

According to the regulator’s news release, the remote betting company failed to intervene and assist a player who was exhibiting signs of risky and problem gambling behavior. Over a period of three months, the gambler lost a sum exceeding $500,000. He had repeatedly canceled withdrawals from his betting account. Despite being flagged by the operator’s system identifying adverse gambling behavior, PointsBet did not take any action.

Furthermore, the commission’s announcement explained that PointsBet did not require the customer to observe the 24-hour cooling-off period when he wished to eliminate the daily deposit limit he had previously set.

Allegations of direct advertising and marketing with no active player consent also added to the gravity of the situation. Various bonuses and credits worth $35,000, were deposited to the player’s account on different occasions in an attempt to entice him into betting even more.

Subsequently, the gambling authority mentioned that in view of the above infringements, the operator failed in yet another area – to provide adequate training to its employees with regard to identifying problem gambling behavior.

PointsBet Has the Right to Appeal the Registrar’s Action

Dr. Karin Schnarr, Chief Executive Officer and Registrar at the AGCO commented on the case, reminding that online operators are obliged to monitor their customers for signs of problem gambling behavior and intervene timely and adequately to reduce the potential harm. She added that the regulator would continue to emphasize the importance of player protection by ensuring all registered operators comply with these high standards.

As a registered operator, PointsBet was informed that it has the right to appeal against the Registrar’s penalty before the License Appeal Tribunal.

PointsBet’s spokesperson commented that the company was aware of the allegations and that they would provide no further comments at present.

Since Canada’s most populous province launched its competitive iGaming market in 2022, AGCO has fined operators several times over infringements of gambling regulations.

SZTFH Chairman Submits Report on Measures Taken against Unlicensed Gambling

SZTFH Chairman Submits Report on Measures Taken against Unlicensed GamblingBiró Marcell, Chairman of the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities of Hungary (SZTFH), has submitted a report to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, tackling the recent measures implemented against unlicensed gambling operators.

The SZTFH is the Hungarian regulatory authority responsible for the monitoring of gambling, tobacco, cyber security, and mining sectors. The said industries produce a combined turnover of over HUF 2,000 billion per year and provide employment to more than 50,000 people.

As of 2022, the country chose to put an end to the existing monopoly regime and liberalize its gambling market, enabling offshore providers to apply for a license to legally operate in the country. At the very start of the current year, Hungary officially opened up its online marketplace, thus abandoning the previous model, where the state-owned Szerencsejáték Zrt was the sole provider of gambling services.

The introduction of a competitive licensing system necessitated amendments to the Hungarian Gambling Act (1991), concerning the requirements for obtaining a license, the applicable taxes, safer gambling practices, and the protection of players.

The report further detailed that before these amendments took place, Hungary had to face over 160 appeals filed by international gambling companies. What they challenged was the stance of the Hungarian state in support of its former gambling monopoly. Consequently, in 2017, the European Court of Justice urged Hungary to adjust its gambling legislation to meet the established EU standards for fair business competition.

Although the regulatory amendments took effect on January 1, 2023, the report revealed that an additional 32 appeals have been filed. They challenged the new regulations enforced by the Hungarian monitoring authority. Among other measures, they included a requirement for a capital reserve minimum of HUF1 billion (€2.8 million), as well as a license fee amounting to HUF600 million (€1.6 million).

Additionally, applicants who have provided illegal gambling services to Hungarian citizens over the last five years would be automatically disqualified from the application process.

Biró Marcell Reports Three Specific Mechanisms Used against Unlicensed Online Gambling

In light of the above-mentioned measures concerning the liberalization of the gambling marketplace in Hungary, Biró Marcell has firmly advocated all actions taken by the SZTFH to ensure the smooth regulation of the sector. The transition from a monopoly model to a competitive gambling market required setting strict standards that must be observed.

SZTFH’s Chairman explained that the authority utilized three separate mechanisms to thwart illegal gambling operations. They included blocking access to unlicensed operators, preventing payment flows associated with illegal gambling, and filing criminal charges.

The Chairman of the regulatory agency further added that in view of the legal proceedings undertaken by the international operators they “have clearly expressed that they do not wish to become part of the legal Hungarian market”. As of September 2023, SZTFH had not processed new applications from foreign operators.
